The term AMPHOREAS describes a ceramic vase with an oval body and a handle on both sides. The name amphora comes from the adverb amphi and the verb pheren.
Amphorae were invented in ancient Greece and the art of ancient pottery is preserved and taught to this day by great potters.
They were used for centuries throughout the Mediterranean and the provinces of the Roman Empire until about the 16th century.
Important finds of ancient amphorae - with funerary performances, but also glorious battle performances - have been found in excavations in ancient tombs.
The amphorae, whose construction is distinguished even today for their delicacy, contained wine and olive oil to accompany the deceased to Hades.
Our urns are handmade ceramic vessels, painted or carved by hand with elaborate funeral scenes or great battles of heroes of ancient Greek mythology.

Handmade ceramic vase, decorated with a scene of a visit to the tomb, one of the most beloved scenes for this type of vase, which had a funerary use.
A large tomb column dominates the middle of the composition. On the right side of the stele, a young woman carries a canister of wreaths. Opposite her, to the left of the column, stands a young man, wearing only a robe and holding a spear, apparently her prematurely lost companion.
The performance exudes intense melancholy, emphasized both by the gentle figures of the young couple and by the imposing burial monument.
This is a wonderful work by the painter of Bosanquet.
Hypnos
Handmade ceramic vase, decorated with Io raising the corpse of Memnon's son.
Heos took Memnon's body from Troy and carried it to Ethiopia. The tears that Ios, the goddess of the Dawn, shed then, according to legend, became the drops of dew that we find many mornings on the plants.
Besides, Memnon's companions who mourned him were transformed into birds, the Memnonid hens, while according to another version these birds were born from the ashes of Memnon, after the burning of his body.
Every year since then they have appeared around the hero's grave, as if mourning him.

Dionysus had been captured by pirates and taken to their ship. In the sea, however, the god appeared to the men in his true form, whereupon the men, panicked, jumped into the sea and were transformed by Dionysus into dolphins.
